Rasoul Sorkhabi has B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Jammu University in India and a Ph.D. from Kyoto University in Japan, majoring in geology. After a visit to the Himalayas as a young boy he fell in love with the mountains and decided to study geology. His Ph.D. thesis was on the geochronology and tectonic evolution of the Ladakh and Zanskar Himalayas of northwest India. He has conducted geological studies in India, Nepal, Japan, Borneo, the Rockies and the Great Basin of the American West. He has also constructed a global database on sedimentary basins. Rasoul has held faculty or research positions at Arizona State University, the Technology Research Center of Japan National Oil Corporation, the University of Utah, and Salt Lake Community College. He has also given talks in the USA, Europe, and Asia.
Rasoul is a member of the Geological Society of America (GSA), American Geophysical Union (AGU), American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG), Petroleum History Institute (PHI), History of Earth Science Society (HESS), and National Association of Science Writers (NASW). He is a Certified Professional Geologist by AIPG and AAPG.
Rasoul has published a large number of articles, both technical and popular, in various journals. He has served as contributing editor and writer for Earth (formerly Geotimes), Geology Today, Geo Expro, and The Professional Geologist. He has reviewed numerous research articles for journals, research proposals for the National Science Foundation, and book proposals for several publishing companies. Rasoul has edited books or journal volumes for the Geological Society of America, American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Petroleum History Institute, Geological Society of London, and Elsevier. He has also convened technical sessions at the annual conferences of GSA, AGU, and AAPG.
Rasoul has received the “Distinguished Service Award, 2018” (Petroleum History Institute), “Top Graduate Teachers Fall 2013” (University of Utah, College of Engineering), “Research Performance Award, 2008” (University of Utah, Energy & Geoscience Institute), “Post-Doctoral Fellowship, 1992-1994” (Arizona State University), “Japanese Ministry of Education’s Research Scholarship for Ph.D., 1991” (Kyoto University, Japan), and “Gold Medal for standing First Position in M.Sc. Geology, 1985” (University of Jammu, Department of Geology).
